Title
'Pride O Fife' KY218, Banavie, c.1920
Description
'Pride O Fife' KY218, Banavie, c.1920. Skipper Salter Watson at the wheel. W. Watson was skipper around 1929/1930. This photo of the Steam Drifter ‘Pride O Fife’ was taken by the chief engineer James Gow at Banavie the western end of the Caledonian Canal on the way to the west coast fishing. The ‘Pride O Fife’ was built in 1907 at Portgordon by Wm Geddes for John Watson (Salter) and was engined by John Lewis and Co. Aberdeen. She was the second drifter to be engined by that firm the first being the ‘Mackays’ of St Monans, and the third the ‘Olive Leaf’ of Cellardyke. The engines were compound 16” stroke but later they put out a lot of triple expansion engines and finally extended from Point Lawside across the river to Torry where a fair sized shipbuilding yard carried on for over 35 years building large trawlers and cargo ships. The steam drifter ‘Prife O Fife’ was the third vessel of that name built for the Salter and Watson family. The first was a sailing drifter in 1880 for John Salter, 48’ on keel. The second, KY200, was built in 1900 47’ on keel by Fulton of Pittenweem for John Watson (Salter). The above steam drifter spent the last ten years cargoing at Lyness, Orkney and was broken up in 1948. The last Cellardyke wooden drifter the ‘Breadwinner’ KY253 built for Henry Bett of Fowler Street, was the last to go fishing and finished fishing out of Buckie about 1950. Information from Salter Watson (Senior) ANSFM : 1972.86.1
