Steam locomotive, Anstruther, 1900.
Steam locomotive, Anstruther Shed, 1900. NBR (North British Railway)

The railway line opened in Anstruther in 1863 with trains running to and from Leven, serving the fishing, agriculture and textile industries, and an important passenger traffic built up.

The line was continued to St Andrews in 1887 and the resulting 'Fife Coast Railway' thrived until declining coal and fish cargoes and a move towards road transport caused the line close to passengers in 1965 and to goods traffic in 1966.
