Loch Fyne Skiff 121CN.
The Loch Fyne Skiff ‘Mary McLellan’ 121CN, owned by William Gilchrist, Campbeltown, under sail in Kilbrannan Sound. The leech of her sail has been patched. She was built in 1901 by John Thomson, Ardrossan, and named after Gilchrist’s wife.

Thomson served a seven-year apprenticeship as a boatbuilder at the Fyfe yard in Fairlie before starting out on his own. His work force at Ardrossan included his wife, Isabella, of whom it was written, ‘She could strike the water-line or use a hammer with the best of them’. She started work at 6 a.m. with her husband, and her carpentry was interrupted only by her return home at 8 a.m. to attend to her family of 12 children. She died in September 1944, having outlived her husband by 18 years.
