Ring-net being hauled
A ring-net in the final stages of hauling by the crew of ‘Mystical Rose’ CN245 off the Brown Head, Arran, in the 1930s. There appears to be a very heavy catch of herring in the bag, and the cork-rope is taut with the strain. There was a winter spawning fishery at the Brown Head, but the inshore ground was bad there and damage to gear a risk.

Mystical Rose’ was built by H. McLean & Sons, Govan, in 1932, for James Meenan Jr., John Meenan and George Meenan. She was requisitioned by the Ministry of War Transport (Marine Division) on 14 March 1942 and was acquired outright for service abroad on 20 November 1946, along with the first ‘Moira’ CN261.

Of the 24 modern ring-netters fishing from Campbeltown before the war, 10 were requisitioned after the war began and the first of these were manned by members of their existing crews.
D. Meenan, Campbeltown.
