Title
Lifeboat 'James and Ruby Jackson' in Anstruther
Description
Lifeboat 'James and Ruby Jackson' in Anstruther, 1964. ‘James and Ruby Jackson’ was a Liverpool-Class 35 Foot 6" x 10 8'w twin-screw motor lifeboat. She served at Anstruther from 1950 to 1965 (continuing to 1968 as relief lifeboat to ‘The Doctors’) and was launched 63 times saving 45 lives. One of the most memorable services undertaken by this boat was on the night of October 26th 1953. The sandboat 'Island Magee' had left the Tay earlier that day, and at night, with worsening weather conditions, distress flares were seen south-south-east of the Carr lightship. The 'James and Ruby Jackson' was launched at dead low water in very adverse weather conditions and went eastwards towards the search area. During the search, she was swamped twice. One of the crew said he remembered seeing the bullring in the stem, and that was the only thing above water. About one o'clock in the morning, the Arbroath lifeboat joined the search and both boats were in touch with each other for the rest of the night. On being recalled after a fruitless search, both boats made their way to their respective ports. After the 'James and Ruby Jackson' was rehoused, the crew went home for breakfast and dry clothes. Then the news came through that the Arbroath lifeboat had capsized entering Arbroath harbour, and all the crew were lost except one. There were no survivours from the 'Island Macgee' either. After taking part in many rescues, the 'James and Ruby Jackson' left Anstruther in May 1965 and continued service for the RNLI in Ireland.
