Newspaper cutting detailing Buckhaven fishmarket
Newspaper cutting detailing Buckhaven fish market. The image was taken c.1895.

The text reads:' The fish market in Buckhaven about 1895, and a very different scene from a fish market today, with fish being sold by the ton and travelling many hundreds of miles to reach the housewives' tables.

The photograph was lent to SFM by Ms E. Thomson of Buckhaven, whose brother James, second from the left, was a mere teenager when it was taken.

Though he's holding a large cod, he neither caught it nor bought it. According to his sister, James was 'always full of fun' and he looks as he's having fun showing the prospective buyers the handsome catch.

James went to Canada in 1911 and died there in 1950.
