Title
'Jacob George' YH176, Eyemouth, 4 February 1936
Description
Steam drifter, 'Jacob George' YH176, ashore just outside Eyemouth harbour, 4 February 1936. As reported in "The Scotsman" on 5 February 1936: "DRIFTER GROUNDS — Crew of 11 Taken Ashore by Breeches Buoy. "THRILLS AT EYEMOUTH When the Yarmouth steam drifter 'Jacob George', which had been engaged in herring fishing from Eyemouth for the past few weeks, was about to enter Eyemouth Harbour with her catch yesterday she grounded near the harbour mouth. A heavy sea was running, and huge waves broke over the drifter, which rocked from side to side. "The crew of the Eyemouth boat 'Spesbona' (Skipper W. Paterson) attempted to pull the drifter clear, but the rope broke. The local life-saving apparatus crew were summoned by rocket, and were quickly on the scene. Within a short time the drifter men, who were drenched, were pulled ashore, one by one, by the breeches buoy. The Eyemouth lifeboat stood by. "The members of the drifter crew are : — W. Balls (skipper/owner), W. Dougal, W. Boltitude, C. Guyton, A. Whaleman, D. Mewse, C. Fenn, J. Gray, C. Bean, C. Roberts, and B. Calder, all of Yarmouth. Dougal is a native of Eyemouth. The men were taken to the Home Arms Hotel, where they were provided with dry clothing. As the tide ebbed the 'Jacob George' was left high and dry last night. She was on a sandy bottom, but appeared to have sustained damage, as water was running from her hull." The Mate was William Maltman Dougal, an Eyemouth man who normally took the boat into Eyemouth Harbour, but on this occasion the Skipper William (Billy) Balls did it himself. The drifter was refloated six days later and towed into Eyemouth harbour. Original - M Fairnie via C. Carruthers
