Group portrait of ring-net fishermen, Campbeltown, 1920s.
‘Young’ John McKay’s ring-net crews photographed in 1910 to mark the emigration to New Zealand of crew-member William Buchanan. He was born at Carradale in 1856, married Jane Currie, Killean, and emigrated with four sons and three daughters, son John having gone out in 1906. William and Jane celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in New Zealand in 1932.

Bottom row, L-R: James Meenan, George McMillan, William Buchanan, ‘Young’ John McKay, and John McGown.

McKay’s skiffs at that time were ‘Angelus’ CN8 and ‘Ascension’ CN29, both built in 1904.

The McKay family migrated to Campbeltown from Red Bay, County Antrim, and the brothers Archie, Denis and John were all exceptionally successful fishermen. Most of the fishermen in the photograph were of Irish origin.
