Title
Lifeboat James and Mary Walker
Description
Lifeboat James and Mary Walker, Anstruther. The third Lifeboat to be stationed at Anstruther on the Firth of Forth, Scotland, the 'James and Mary Walker' arrived in Anstruther on 30 July 1904 on a horse drawn carriage having travelled by rail from London. 'James and Mary Walker' was a Watson type non-self-righting lifeboat. She was 38 ft long by 9 ft 4 inches beam and was fitted with two centreboards and a heavy iron keel, but with no water ballast tanks. She had 2 masts, 2 standing lug sails, and a jib, and was rowed with 12 oars. On the 10th September she was named the 'James and Mary Walker' by Mrs Walker of Lime Grove, West Calder, who gifted the boat in memory of her husband and daughter. Sir Ralph Anstruther accepted the boat on behalf of the local station and Lady Anstruther opened the new lifeboat shed which had just been built. The dedication service was conducted by the Reverend J. Woodside assisted by Rev. James Buchart. The vessel successfully completed many recorded rescues during her service in Anstruther until 1933. After many years of use, change of name and neglect, she was abandoned in a boat yard on the Isle of Anglesey. She was obtained in 2010 and brought back to Anstruther. The James & Mary Walker Community Restoration Project group was formed with the aim of restoring and displaying the vessel. ANSFM : 1976.93
