The 'James and Ruby Jackson' was a Liverpool type lifeboat 35' 6 " by 10' 8" and has twin 30 horsepower ferry diesel engines. She was built at Groves and Cuttridge, Cowes, on the Isle of Wight. The boat was sailed up to her home station by coxswain Martin Gardner, known as 'Acorn Mairt', and his crew composed of 2nd coxswain Martin Gardner aka 'Mace Mairt', Donnie Jack the mechanic, and Alex Doig.

They called into a port every night on the way and it was always where there was a lifeboat station. They were given great hospitality by the people there. These ports were Newhaven, Ramsgate, Gorleston, Spurn Head, Whitby, Seahouses, and then home. While passing close to Caister, the famous coxswan Blogg was standing waving.

The boat arrived on the 19th October 1950, but the naming ceremony did not take place until the 18th July 1951. The boat was a gift of Mr. J. Jackson of Falkland and was named by Miss Myrtle Lumsden, a sister of Ruby Jackson. The boat was dedicated by the Reverend J.A. Paterson. She was handed over by Captain the Honourable Sir Archibald Cochrane, Vice Chairman of the Scottish Lifeboat Council, and was accepted by Provost W.W. Carstairs on behalf of the local committee.

‘James and Ruby Jackson’ served at Anstruther from 1950 to 1965 (continuing to 1968 as relief lifeboat to ‘The Doctors’) and was launched 63 times saving 45 lives.
