Title
From a painting, Aberlady Bay, before 1900.
Description
From a painting, Aberlady Bay, by Ferguson, a well known Scottish artist, in 1903. Cockenzie herring boats were often laid up here between herring seasons possibly to avoid harbour dues. Old boats were also dumped in this bay where their skeletons can still be seen. There is a song 'Aberlady Bay' in a recording collected by School of Scottish Studies. The boats are sheltering in the bay. The Earl of Wemyss owned the bay area and the boats paid 3d each to him, a year for using the bay. When the big boats came back from Yarmouth they sheltered there. Sma' liners laid up there in the summer while their crews took the herring boats off to Yarmouth. Original: Cockenzie, Primary School, via C. Carruthers
