Title
Tarring Ropes, Port Seton, pre 1914
Description
Harbour in the days of sail. The men are tarring ropes. Ropes were tarred and dragged over the large boulders in foreground to dry. The end of the cottages on left, was known by Port Seton men as Famie's corner. Famie Belfrage had a shop there and sold sweeties, peas and lemonade to fisher bairns. She moved to Aberlady and began selling chips there. The Earl of Wemyss put a stop to this as Aberlady was not the type of place to have a chip shop. When fishermen anchored in Aberlady Bay for the winter, they used her shop to buy their boats victuals. Boats seen are 'Consolation', LH 332; 'Margaret & Jemima', LH 1112 Original from Cockenzie School via C Carruthers.
