View of Helmsdale harbour with boats moored alongside a curing yard where there are piles of barrels of herring. There are two trading ships and what appear to be Zulus and Scaffies. A group of women are sitting beside a cart at the right of the photograph.

The absence of any steam-powered vessels suggests a date pre-1890.
