Group portrait of Campbeltown fishermen, 1909.
The volunteer crew of Campbeltown fishermen which assisted Captain Duncan Martin in the rescue of the brothers Joseph and Robert Houston of the ketch ‘Jane’ of Belfast, which dragged her anchors and drove ashore at the head of Campbeltown Loch during a storm and blizzard on 29 December 1908. By the time the brothers were rescued from the boat’s rigging, their father, James, had died from exposure.

In February 1909, at a public ceremony in the Town Hall, Campbeltown, Captain Martin was formally presented with a silver medal and certificate from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
