Title
Brailing herring onboard 'Verbena', BA66, c.1937
Description
Brailing herring onboard 'Verbena', BA66, c.1937 Herring are scooped out of the net with a brailer, a long stocking shaped bag attached to an iron hoop on a wooden pole. The tail of the bag is hoisted by the brailer derrick and the fish is emptied into the deck pound or hold. The iron frame can be seen here scooping the fish out of the net. To keep the boats apart, crewmen forward in each boat use long poles to fend off. The boat was built as ‘Virginia’ BA66 by W. Weatherhead, Cockenzie, in 1929, for Sloan brothers, Maidens, Ayrshire. When replaced with ‘Virginia’ BA202 in 1935, she became ‘Verbena’ and retained the registration BA 66. She was later renamed 'Silver Crest', BA66 and later re-registered W32, OB84, and finally PL10.
