Title
Portrait of John Meenan, Campbeltown, early 1950s.
Description
Portrait of John 'Jock' Meenan, Campbeltown, early 1950s. Thomas Meenan, a fish merchant and John's father, came to Campbeltown from Ireland in the late 1830s. One of his sons, Daniel, became a fisherman and owned the skiff 'Vampire' CN446, built by Robert Wylie, Campbeltown, in 1895. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, John Meenan, known as ‘Jock’, skippered the ‘Mystical Rose’ CN245, in which he had a share. In 1940, he became sole owner, but she was requisitioned in 1942 by the Ministry of War Transport (Marine Division) and he then took charge of the ‘Gratitude’ CN114, whose skipper, Pat McKay, had been called up. When Jock’s nephews Jim and Denis Meenan had the ‘Stella Maris’ CN158 built in 1948, Jock, with his skill and experience, was her first skipper. A well-liked and widely respected fisherman, he lived at Mill Cottage, Millknowe, emigrated to Canada c 1954 with his wife, Margaret McKay, and family, and died in Toronto in 1957, aged 62. Original image from D. Meenan, Campbeltown.
