Title
George R Wood A723
Description
'George R Wood', A723 off the coast of Aberdeen. Built by Ritchie Graham & Milne of Glasgow (Yard no: 369), as the steam trawler William Gillett. She was launched on 25/6/1919 and completed on 5/11/1919. She was originally built for the Admiralty and was fitted with a triple expansion steam engine. In 1925, she was owned by the Air Ministry and renamed Adastral. In 1946, she was owned by William & James Johnston of Newhaven, Edinburgh. She was then renamed, Doreen Johnston GN27. In 1952, she was sold to George R Wood. She was now in the ownership of the Ailsa Craig Fishing Company. She was then renamed George R Wood A723. In 1958, she was fitted with a 600bhp 4 stroke 6-cylinder diesel engine, by A K Diesels of Lowestoft, in place of her original steam engine. After conversion, her length was 115ft 8in, and her beam was 22ft 2in. She was 209 gross tons. She was renamed Netherley A723, in 1970. This was to allow the continued use of the name George R Wood for another vessel. In March 1971, she arrived at Bo'ness on the River Forth for scrapping by P & W McLellan Ltd. She towed Silver Seas A65 to the scrapyard. OFFICIAL NO: 144563.
