Title
R.N.L.I. Lifeboat 'The Doctors' of Anstruther
Description
R.N.L.I. Lifeboat 'The Doctors' of Anstruther. The original photo was taken by David Smith Jnr. and adopted as the official postcard by the Ladies Branch. A notable rescue happened on the 13th April 1937 when she saved 27 passangers from the 'Island of Copenhagen', which went ashore on May Island in a fog. She finished her lifeboat service in October 1950, and was bought by Mr Alastair Simpson of Southend-on-Sea who fitted her as a fishing boat. She was still seen fishing from that port in the 1970s. ‘The Doctors’ is an Oakley twin screw motor lifeboat, built by William Osbourne at Littlehampton in 1960. Her official number was 307849 and her lifeboat number was 983. She served at Anstruther from 1965 and was launched 62 times, saving 21 lives. The boat was gifted by Dr. Nora Allan of Bearsden and was named in memory of her father and brothers who were all doctors. The boathouse was adapted for the new Oakley class lifeboat, carriage and tractor. Following the ending of her active service in 1993, ‘The Doctors’ was put on display at Buckie Drifter Centre in April 1995 until she was purchased by her current owner based in Donaghadee, County Down. She is number 1774 on the National Historic Ships UK Register. Image donated by Mrs A. Wood of Dundee.
