The crew of the skiff ‘Janet’ of Campbeltown with a large common skate caught in the Kilbrannan Sound in 1929. Officially, the fish was caught by long line, but Angus Martin later heard that it was taken illegally in a small otter trawl.

The photograph, taken at Lochranza pier, Arran, shows, L-R: James Martin and the brothers Peter, Donald and William Gilchrist. The catch was reported on 21 September 1929 in the Campbeltown Courier, which noted: ‘The fishermen and their capture were snapped, and a few days later a photograph appeared in the “Bulletin”’.
