Title
'Spes Melior' KY19, Yarmouth, 1927
Description
Steel standard steam drifter 'Spes Melior' KY19, Yarmouth, 1927. She was one of two standard drifters built at Scott's yard, Bowling, Dumbartonshire. The other was 'Waft'. 'Spes Melior' was scrapped in 1952. Standard drifters were boats designed by the government to replace requisitioned boats lost in WWI. There were many yards building these boats, but all to the same design - either steel or wooden hulled. They originally had names of elements. 'Spes Melior' was built by Scott & Sons of Bowling in 1919 for the Admiralty as HMD 'Undertow'. After beginning fishing in 1920 in Buckie as BCK368, she was sold to Cockenzie in 1921 and re-registered LH297. She was sold to William Moncrieff of Cellardyke in 1924 and was one of a number of standard steel drifter/liners sold to Peterhead after the Second World War(becoming PD397) then scrapped at St. Davids.
