Susie's Castle, Portincaple, Loch Long c.1910
Susie's Castle, Portincaple, Loch Long, Susie stands at the door of her house, made from an upturned boat. She is smoking a pipe and knitting. A small Zulu lies alongside the house which has a felt roof, a window and a chimney. A cat and a chicken are in the foreground.

‘Susie’ was Susan McGlone (1847-1929) who lived with her husband, Jamie Reid, in a hut on the shore at Portincaple. He fished and she sold the catch around the neighbourhood. Their home was an upturned smack, cut in half and converted into living accommodation, a not-uncommon practice. After her husband’s death, she lived alone in her ‘castle’ with cats for company. Her life has been well documented.
