Barking nets at Newhaven c.1890
Newhaven fishermen barking nets, 1890s. Cotton rotted easily so nets were boiled in a solution of cutch (oak bark) to preserve them. In winter, Forth fishermen used alum because white nets were thought to be less visible to fish in the clearer winter water when there was less algae.
