Portrait of two fishermen, Tarbert, c.1870.
Portrait of two Tarbert, Loch Fyne, fishermen, c 1870. The man on the left is sitting on a lobster creel and holding a ‘spale-basket’ – a kind of early fish-scoop – and is wearing calf-length leather sea boots, and his companion has his right hand in a sling. Hugh McFarlane, who drowned in the Crinan Canal in 1876, aged 33, may be on the left, and the other man may be his brother James, but no certainty is possible.
