Title
Caiplie Coves with 'Covie Jimmy'
Description
Caiplie Coves with Jimmy Gilligan the Cave Dweller, AKA 'Covie Jimmy', c.1915. Jimmy was born in Aberdeen in 1859 and, after losing both parents, joined the army. He served in Afghanistan and in South Africa where he was severely injured in the head and legs. On leaving the army, and finding himself homeless, he settled at the Coves around 1909. He lived there until 1939 and died in Edinburgh in 1940. The cave opening has been fitted with a door and window, through which points the chimney from Jimmy's stove. Note the cow horns and text on the rock face: 'RELIGION, ET BONIS MORIBUS', meaning 'Religion and good manners'. Original image from Crail Museum
