Title
Crew of the 'Ariel Gazelle' BK1082
Description
The Crew of the 'Ariel Gazelle' BK1082 Standing left to right : Richard Collin, Paul Fairbairn, William Dougal and Robert Craig. Seated left to right : David Stephenson, Alex Burgon (skipper) and George Craig. The "Ariel Gazelle" faced the storm of the 14th October 1881 for 22 hours and eventually sailed into Eyemouth 45 hours after leaving port, her sails tattered and patched and laced together. The crew were exhausted, "Ariel Gazelle" was the last boat to return safely. 129 men from Eyemouth and 189 men from the east coast drowned that fateful friday. John Burgon re-assembled the crew for this historic photograph. This was the only crew to return having been at sea for the longest time. Burgon kept the "Ariel Gazelle" at sea rather than taking the fifie into port which caused the downfall of so many of her neighbours who were swamped and sunk, thus "Ariel Gazelle" successfully rode out the storm.
