Boats at New Quay, Campbeltown.

The crane in the background was used for landing coal. The man on the left is the grandfather of the donor and one of the boats pictured is 'Fortunatus', CN10. She was owned and skippered by Donald McAnsh, Greenhill, Torrisdale, who replaced her in 1933 with the 'Betty' of Girvan. He moved to Rothesay in June 1944, with his wife, Ada Mary Peters, and died there in 1955, aged 68.

The object on the slip between the two men is a water-cask, such as was carried to sea on skiffs. Its flattened form was to stop it rolling around, and the stopper, or ‘bung’, is visible on the top

Image came from William Anderson via I. Stewart, Campbeltown.
