Cromwell gave £300 to build the old harbour wall. The Victoria Harbour was built in 1842. The old protection before either harbour was built was called Lanmer Haven.

In 1842, Dunbar was one of the chief seats of herring fishing, coasting and whaling but the fishing industry dwindled away. Crabs and some fish continued to be caught but bigger boats work out of Eyemouth.
