Title
Portrait of Skipper Tom Ralston onboard 'Golden Fleece', CN170, Whitby, 1952.
Description
Campbeltown skipper, Tom Ralston, on board his ring-netter ‘Golden Fleece’ CN170 at Whitby, 1952. He acquired her in 1949 as the ‘Bonito’ BA178, which was built by Walter Reekie, St Monans, in 1932, for J. Anderson, Dunure. On 17 March 1958, when her engine caught fire on passage in the Kilbrannan Sound, Ralston grounded her north of Saddell and she became a total loss. In December 1952, at Whitby, Ralston was presented with the Hartley Cup for the biggest catch of herring landed there by a pair of ring-net boats during the preceding season. His ‘Golden Fleece’ and Duncan MacDonald’s ‘Golden Hind’ CN199 landed 83 crans on 19th September. Original image from T. Ralston, Lundin Links.
